In todays first period lesson, we finished writing down notes on synergy and looked at our classmates presentations on a movie we had to look at. We wrote down what they did for marketing campaign and the USP. The ones we looked at was both high budget films. We also looked at why American films dominant our market and wrote down more notes on this. In our second period lesson my group started with our sound and starting to finish off as it is by tomorrow. We listened to a lot of different music clips and in the end we finally found one that fit best with our sequence. So we put that in and also deleted some sound clips we didn't want. We are going to finish off the sound tomorrow as we only have another little part to do.

17/04/13

In todays lesson we did research for part of our case study which we were able to do in a group or in partners. We also looked at what we need to know for our exam which is coming up quite soon. We started writing  down notes on the main key parts for our exam which we will finish in tomorrows lesson.

Monday 15 April 2013

15/04/13

This was our first lesson after coming back from half term. Before the half term we finished all our film making and handed it in. But what our group was having troubles with was the sound. We were not able to finish the sound for our sequence which is the most important part. But in todays lesson miss told us that she knew that the sound was not finished and said that we are able to finish the sound off by this week Friday. So In this lesson we started doing our sound again. We are going to carry on in our Thursdays lesson.

Thursday 21 March 2013

21/03/13

In this lesson, it was the last lesson for the editing for our sequence. In todays lesson we added the credits into our sequence and also the sound. We fixed a few mistakes on the credits and made a bit better. We think we have worked well as in a group. What we wished we had was more time then we could have made our sound better which we struggled a lot in. We tried our best and we hope that its fine.

18/03/13

In today's lesson we did the editing. From last Thursday on academic mentoring day, we couldn't do anything because our files kept getting erupted, and we had to wait forever for it render. It was the same for the Fridays lesson. So today, we deleted the files that did not work and edited them again. It worked much better this time and we found out something new we didn't know before. If you click a clip on top of another click, where you want that clip to play it plays. We don't have to spilt and cut and delete all the time now. Me and Katy stayed after school and did more editing. We nearly finished now and what we also did was add the credits into the actual sequence. We had two parts of the credits but got rid of one with the static as it did not go with the rest of the sequence. Also i  carried on working on sound, i looked for different types of sound clips that i think would go with our sequence.

18/03/13

Me and Katy did a blog today describing what we did in the lesson. If you would like to see the video you can click here

Friday 15 March 2013

15/03/13

Today we carried on with editing. Well, we wanted to carry on our editing hoping it would work as it did not yesterday. But it still did not open. We tried to render the clips that were not rendered but it said we had to wait about 3 hours. We couldn't do editing again, so what we did was save and import our life type to misses computer to put it on our sequence. Before we imported it, we made our beginning credit a bit longer as it was really fast. It took over the whole lesson but we still got it done and imported.

Thursday 14 March 2013

14/03/13

Today was academic mentoring day. Today our group all came in at 10.30 and started the rest of the editing. As we did not have much to do, we were planning on finishing the editing today. But that did not go as we planned. While we were starting the editing, our clips started to not work. It wouldn't play and when we tried to put a effect to a clip, it just made it crash. We quited and started again a couple of times but still it did not work. After the few times we tried, we realised that maybe it was the rendering problem. So we rendered the clips again that wasn't rendered. When we started to do that the rendering just took us so long. It said that the estimated time was 5 hours for the rendering to finish. So we cancelled it and tried it again, but still the rendering was taking too long. While we were waiting we did a bit of sound on garage band. We made the sound clips longer to match with our credits and also added few bits to it. Even when we finished doing that, the rendering was not done. After we all left and Katy stayed, the rendering had still not finished so miss said that she would save it if the rendering has finished before she goes home. Today we did have a lot of trouble with our editing and clips and now we think we have to do it all over again because it would just not open. We have decided to meet tomorrow again and try and figure out and fix it so that we do not have to go through the trouble of starting it again.

Wednesday 13 March 2013

13/03/13

In today's lesson, our group all got check ups on our blogs and what we need to add before the deadline. We also showed Mr Phillips our distribution PowerPoint we had to do for our homework and also got feed backs on them. We did a bit of editing in class and also stayed after school for a bit to carry on with our editing. We are basically done with our editing but we are still having a few troubles with where we can put the flashbacks because we still cannot find a place where it is all continuous. We are meeting tomorrow at 10am till 1pm as it is academic mentoring day, to finish off our editing.

Monday 11 March 2013

11/03/13

In todays lesson i started to edit and get used to the new system. Some of us also got check ups on their bloggs and what mark they are working at, at the moment. While editing, we got clips that went better with the other clips so we added them in. It looks much better than last time and we hope we can be able to do it this time without any troubles.

Friday 8 March 2013

08/03/13

In today's lesson my group started to edit the clips again after the burglary. So far they said that it has been working fine and that they know what to do much better as we have done it twice already. They know exactly where things go and what matcher's with what. So, so far it is looking good for us.

Wednesday 6 March 2013

06/03/12

In todays lesson, we looked at a part of our real exam. We looked at film distribution and also watched a video that gave us an insight on film distribution and the different stages in it. We were told to write down notes about it as it would help us when we do the write up.

The Art of the title

The art of the title

Scott pilgrim vs the world

  • The start of this they show the production company with the a band playing.
  • It shows a far away shot of people listening which can suggest that it is that loud
  • The production company credit is going together with the beat of the music
  • Even when the title of the film is shown, it moves with the beat of the music, with the drums.
  • For the background for the opening they use bright colours all the way
  • The image they use is hearts, guitars, skateboards, stars, bombs and battery dying,  it all represents fun and what teenagers just do or go through each day.
  • The credits and the picture all move with the music and match the beat of the drums and guitar.
  • The hearts that are shown can represent something like love
  • Throughout the opening they give hints about what this movie might be about like they show a guitar a lot which may suggest it is something fun or rocky or even about music.
  • The images in the background are shown very fast because it moves with the music and because it goes very fast, it almost makes you want to nod your head up and down with the music because you feel excited.
  • All bright colours are used which is also a sign of fun and happiness.
  • At the end it shows the directer and goes off when the music stops.

The girl with the dragon tattoo

  • It starts with the production company
  • It starts off from the beginning with the colour and the image being very dark, almost black
  • Throughout the whole opening title, the colour is black
  • This can suggest the tattoos as the tattoos are normally black and they use black ink for it. This is also giving the answer to the title ' the girl with the dragoon "tattoo" '.
  • They also show liquid which can represent the ink of the tattoo
  • Because the colour is dark and black, it gives a sense of what the movie is about. It makes it very mysterious.
  • In the middle of the opening title they show a torch with fire that is lite. This can represent the dragon, and the dragons breath and the people burning from it can also show how hot fire is and that it is dangerous.
  • Also the seeing people burning from the fire also gives us the fact that maybe this film is something to do with horror, or crime.
  • In the middle of the title it also shows the dragon briefly with the fire all over the body. This also gives hints about the title and the movie.
  • Also the way they show a person drowning and while the person drowns deeper, the dragon is born and born and then into a full dragon when the person is drowned.
  • The way they show us flies coming out of the eye and the month is kind of disturbing and uncomfortable for me to watch. But this has an real effect on the audience on their reaction and tension and horrible feeling they make us feel inside while just watching the title of the film.
  • But because the colour throughout the whole title is black and dark, we never lose the feeling that this is not mysterious or a bit creepy.
  • And we get a real sense of the title as it uses ink which may represent the tattoo ink.
  • Also the way they use fire, the colour is only bright for then which can suggest that this fire, this dragon is a important part of the film.

Sound

Sound

Scapegoat opening sequence

This opening sequence of scapegoat sound is quite simple but very effective at the same time. But this is diegetic sound and it links with what is going on in the the image. In the beginning when the character walks and then walks fast, they use static sound which has an effect which is a bit mysterious. And what also makes it mysterious is that they use wind noises that emphasises the loneliness that hes alone and everyone around him is not alive and gone. I love this sound because i think it is very creepy and suits what is shown to us in the opening credit. Also when we are shown the dead bodies, a bang sound is made which has an effect that it is a important part of the credit sequence. From the beginning of the credit sequence and to the middle and when it shows the bodies, it builds up the tension in me and it makes me think what is going to happen next. When it does show the bodies and the way it flickers fast and cuts to the face and body of the persons body it  makes it kind of uncomfortable for me to watch. Also at the end when it shows few people and a really quick turning of the face and the sound of peoples voices which is kind of non-diegetic makes me react fast and think fast about what is going on. And when they use the bang sound at the end and shows the characters face gives me a jump which is also effective and lets us know that it is scary. I really like this opening credits because the way the not just the sound but the credits and image fit well together and flows very well. The music is kind of not normal, sort of disorted which i like because it makes it more sure of the genre and keeps me building tension throughout the whole clip. I would really like to use this idea of kind of disorted and simple sounds to our opening sequence as our sequence is kind of simple as well. And i would also love to use the static sound for the flashabacks and also the credits.

Opening credits

Opening credits

Credits by Jason Brown.

I really like this opening credits clip. I like this opening credit clip because from just looking at the moving pictures and imagery he uses, it just says horror to me. He shows that this is going to be a horror film from just looking the pictures with the sculls and hearts and bones with no skin just shows all the signs of it being scary.  Also the way in which he moves the camera in different directions, it has another impact that its going to be something scary rather than it being just still. It makes me feel that its trying to build the tension in us before the film even starts. Also the camera zooms in and out of pictures and texts, that show the main bits of the credit sequence which i think makes it every eye catching. This opening credits is a bit everywhere when you look at it. It is kind off like you don't know whats going on , but that sense of confusion gives me the idea that it is something mysterious. At the end of the film when it shows the text of social girl varnishes in capital letters, that also shows that this is going to be something mysterious and scary and this also gives a sense of horror.

An American horror movie opening credits.

The very beginning of this where it cuts to another shot and then flashes very fast to another shot shows that its scary. This opening credits is really fast which builds up the tension from the beginning of the sequence. They show us fast flashes of baby photos and all with different saturation and coluor and a broken picture. This makes me feel very scared and makes me feel that something has happened and that this child in the picture has something to do with it. It also shows flashbacks of skulls in jars and babies again in jars and a woman's picture, and then it cuts to the credits and the text used is also sort of weird and it only stays for about 3 seconds with the text flashing. From this we are shown clearly about what type of genre it is and what it can be about. It also shows us fast shots of someones legs and someone clamping something and then we are shown blood and a woman's white dress. The way we can't really see what is going on in each flash it makes us wonder what is happening and makes it more effective, rather than actually showing us what is happening. Also everything is shown to us quite dark which also is a sign of danger and mystery. At the end we are shown pictures and broken photo frames, skulls in jars all burning by fire. This also is a sign of horror. Also even the end credits with the name of the movie and when it is coming out, is it all static and moving around so that we are not able to see it clearly but still can work it out what it is saying. It is very effective in a way it is just very fast because that makes us as a audience, think fast and makes the tension build throughout the whole opening credits.

In todays lesson, we looked at our writing practise we did and went through high mark papers that other people have done. We read through it and jotted down what we did not include to get the same high marks. We also looked at the mark scheme for the writing we did on Ashes to Ashes.

Thursday 28 February 2013

28/02/13

In the first lesson, we looked at our exam paper. We went through it and was set to do a practise writing test. We watched a clip called Ashes to ashes 4 times and while watching so, we had to jot down notes for the practise writing. In the second lesson we went and wrote up our writing practise with the notes we wrote down in the first lesson.

11/02/12-The day we got Robbed.

Today, we have had just the unbelievable day. We got robbed. It was a very big shock to all of us. Some whoever people broke into the media room on the weekend in our school and took all our Mac computers and cameras. Therefore with that we have lost all our work that was supposed to be due in by this Thursday and now we all have to do it over again. But luckily we still have the footage of the sequences we all shot but the editing is gone. Thank you very much robbers. We do not know what we are going to do yet but Miss Thrasher told us that we will be getting news back soon.

07/02/13

In today's lesson we worked on our editing for the park sequence again. We had a double lesson so we had more time. We had a few troubles and then where we couldn't find a right place for the flashbacks. We also had troubles in linking the whole flash black together. We changed the colour and saturation of the flashback clips and left a little gap between the flashback and the film to tell that there is an obvious flashback. We also problems where we put the flashbacks in a order but when we played it over again it didn't go with the rest of the clips. In the second lesson we all looked at each others work on what we did so far and had to give feed backs for each others work.
These were the feed backs that we got from the other groups:

7/02/12

In todays lesson we did more editing on our kitchen sequence and have nearly finished. In todays lesson we also looked at eachothers and gave feed back about each.

2/02/13 Park sequence

Today we filmed our final park sequence for our opening sequence. I think it went well today because we knew what we were doing so that made it much more easier for us. The child we used, who had to act for us followered what we said very well so it made it more comfortable for us and for her to work together. Also on this day, me and katy did the risk assessment for the park sequence.

Location for park sequence

Location for park sequence

This is our location for where we are going to shot the park sequence. It is right next to dolphin nursery in Kingston. We chose this park because this park looks a creepier than other parks and it had swings that were kind of old and a roundabout that we need for our park sequences.

Behind the scenes

This is our Behind the scenes for the kitchen scene. We had to wait quite a while for it to get dark to start shooting but i still think it turned out very well.

Thursday 17 January 2013

Thursdays meeting

In todays double period lesson me and katy continued the editing for the audience questionnaire. We have nearly finished editing this and will be continuing in next thursdays lesson.

Wednesday 16 January 2013

First day of shooting

We started filiming today for our kitchen sequence. Although we had to wait a while for it to get dark to start shooting as it has to suit our genre horror/thriller. I still think it went really well, but i think we will need to redo some bits as some scenes didn't come out the way we wanted and are missing some bits.

Storyboard-My own

Storyboard My Own

">

Our story response

I think that our story for the opening sequence is going to be very good. I like it because, although it solves only two sequences, we still have to shot in a lot of different ways and do loads of different shots to make it more interesting and more appealing to our audience. We asked students in our sixth form about what they think about our story, and their response was that they all thought it is a good idea. They like the flashbacks we are going to be putting in the sequence, they said that this will be very effective. We didn't get any criticisms or what we need to change in our opening sequence, so we took it as they really liked our idea and its going to work well.

Monday 14 January 2013

Mondays meeting

In todays lesson me and katy started edting the audience questionnaire. The rest of the editing we decided that i will go and finish it off at home.

Target audience research

This is our Target audience research. Our target audience is 15-24 of age. We got feed back for our story line. We told the audiences before the interview about our story and we all got back positive answers. They said that the flashbacks are a really good idea and that it is very effective. They also said that our idea is kind of mysterious and that, it makes them more wanting to come and see our film.

Opening scences

 Opening scenes

Narrative functions:
  • To introduce character
  • Establish narrative structure
  • Captivate core themes
  • Introduce core iconography
  • Establishes audience expectation through use of generic conventions

Legally blonde

We know straight away that this is a girlie chick flick film also romance comedy film due to the titles that are shown before anything else. The titles are written in very feminine like writing and also the colour is in pink which gives us an impression straight away that this is a film for girls. We are also shown a girl riding a bike and her seeking the attention of many male characters. The way she is dressed with the skirt and a crop top makes it even more girl as really girlie girls are known to wear those kind of clothes. Everything is mostly pink, blue and white that girls really like. Also in the mise en scene we are shown nail varnish and the girl putting on nail varnish which is also a sign that this is a film based for girls.
We are also shown a envelope which is also pink that we can see its some sort of card for a girl called 'Ellie' as we see people signing in it. We are also told that she is the main character of the film. We seem to be shown a place where girls live together, like a boarding school and what also makes it sure of what type of genre this is, is because there are actually only showing girls and not boys. Also flowers and bears are shown which represents what girls like as well. The main genre for this movie is shown very obviously with the use of colour, font and the mise en scene from just the opening sequence.
The character also gives us a clear knowledge of what genre this movie is. We see that the character is wearing really pink strap sandals and a dress which is also pink and also all the jewellery she is wearing. This shows us that girls normally like dressing up with all the makeup and jewellery. We are also shown a banner that says homecoming queen which shows that the girls wear makeup and jewellery and wear really standing out clothes to get something out of it, like for example homecoming queen. It shows that girls do this to make them look more beautiful and stand out of the crowd.

Final destination 5
From the beginning of the film we know that this is a high budget film because of the producing company is the one that we all recognise. Also it just seems, by the way we are shown the woman and shes shaking and she has a teddy bear which may present that she is very nervous about getting her eyes down, that something is about to happen. The music that is played from the beginning seems very deep and dark and that also tells us that this is a some sort of horror/thriller film. I think that the music represents the whole genre. Because without the music it would just seem like nothings going on and it wont be as effective as with the music.
The sound starts off quite quite but when we are shown something that happens that is extreme the sound changes and gets louder and we hear all these different sounds that tell us straight away that this is definitely a horror film. An example of this is when the monitor gets higher and the girl starts to panic and then she starts screaming and this is when the music increases to create tension for the audience. This makes it more willing for the audience to watch this film because it makes us more engaged in it as we want to know what happens next.
They've made the trailer very engaging for the audience from the beginning. The effects of the sound and the shot cuts are brilliant, they make it eye catching by showing the main parts of the sequence and cutting where it actually happens. This makes audiences think for a bit about what will happen next and then boom it happens. I think this is also very important in a film because this is what the audiences want in a horror film, the feeling of waiting and getting ready for the fright and when they don't expect it, it happens. They show a clear separation from the main characters and just the extra characters. They do this by either focusing with the camera on that character more or they show clearing throw the shots and shows them throw most of the film, that this is the main character and somethings going to happen to this character.

Saw

From this, we can see from the beginning that from the distribution company that we are shown, that this is a high budget horror film.
The credits that are shown after are very bold and in capital letters to make it stand out and for us to be able to catch what they are trying to say.
Also, from the start of the trailer, the music starts straight away very dark and mysterious, and just from the music we could tell that this is a horror film.
We hear the narrator talking in the background which i think its very effective as it makes the audience think that we are actually in the film and witnessing what is happening as well as the narrator.
We know that this is based on a serial killer and some sort of game because we are shown people trapped in a place with all different types of saws. We are also get the idea that this killer, wants them to try and get out of the problem themselves but they he knows that they will die anyway.
We also know that this is a horror film, not just because of the music and the narrative at the backgrounds but also because we can hear the people screaming for help.
This trailer makes the audiences more engaged in the film and cuts to where the main things happen. This makes the audiences want to watch it and see what actually happens.
They cut the shots very quickly which makes it more effective. They cut through each scene to show the most important parts of the trailer and i think that this builds up the tension of the audiences when they are only watching the trailer.

Credits and titles

Credits and titles

The opening credits are shown at the very beginning, and list the most important members of the production. They are usually shown on a blank screen (blocked colour) or static pictures, or sometimes on top of the action in the film. The music can be playing or not. The opening credits identifies the major actors and crew of the film while the closing credits list an extensive cast and production crew.
Closing credits are added at the end of a motion picture or television program. They usually appear as a list of names in small type. Where opening credits are built into a separate sequence of their own, the correct term is title sequence. Such as the film title sequences for 'Bond, James'. A title sequence is the method where cinematic films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members or both. In movies and television, the title and opening credits may be proceeded by a
'cold open' or teaser (also known as a brief scene) that helps to set the stage for the episode or film.

Many major American motion pictures have changed away with opening credits, with many films, such as Van Helsing in 2004 and Batman begins in 2005, not even displaying the film title until the closing credits began.

Other films who followed the same idea:

The mummy returns 2001

Teacher's pet 2004

No country for old men 2007

The Dark Knight 2008

Final title for our opening sequence

We came up with our final title for our opening sequence. Our final title for our opening sequence will be called '6/6/06'. This stands for June 6th 2006. We have called it this because this is the day that the daughter has died.
